GMB teaching assistants campaign goes to Westminster

Friday, March 14, 2014

We are pleased so many parliamentarians attended our event to show their support for the hard work and dedication of teaching assistants in the classroom every day says GMB.

GMB, the union for school support staff, on Tuesday 11 March 2014 delivered over 1200 postcards of support for Teaching Assistants to MPs in the House of Commons.

There are over a quarter of a million teaching assistants’ across the UK who play a vital role in the classroom. They help pupils to realise their potential and support those with specific educational needs.

GMB has been running a campaign across the West Midlands to support and promote the valuable work of teaching assistants who see their roles threatened by public sector cuts.

The GMB campaign in support of teaching assistants began in June 2013 after the publication of stories in the Sunday Times and Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2334853/Army-teaching-assistants-faces-axe-Education-department-attempts-save-4billion-cost-year.html) about discussions between the Department of Education and the Treasury concerning the possibility of axing 232,000 teaching assistants from schools across the country.

The Birmingham and West Midlands GMB event in The Houses of Parliament allowed MPs to talk directly to local teaching assistants on the front line about the job they do and about the importance of maintaining and supporting teaching assistants in schools.

Joe Morgan, GMB Birmingham & West Midlands Regional Secretary, said: “GMB represent thousands of teaching assistants across the West Midlands. We are pleased so many parliamentarians attended our event to show their support for the hard work and dedication of teaching assistants in the classroom every day.”
