GMB Membership Update - Contract Changes
Over the past few months the City Council has been involved in negotiations with the recognised trade unions over contract change proposals. The talks have not fully concluded but the council has started to embark with staff on formal consultation over your contract. Over the next few weeks you will receive a survey asking for your views. The GMB have already advised members not to complete the survey or if you do to let the council know exactly what you feel about the changes.
Whilst many attempts have been made to change these proposals and the GMB has been very successful in arguing some of the worst elements to the proposals ie Sickness Pay and DBS, we are still left with some that will have a detrimental impact on your contract.
Over the next few months the GMB will be hosting a series of consultation meetings across the city and in workplaces to seek you views on the changes and to receive from you the members a stance on what you want to happen. A meeting will be taking place in your school and we are making bookings ready for the beginning of September. If you have not been informed by your school about the meetings ask them when they are taking place. The employer has a legal duty to ensure that you are consulted by your recognised trade union. Some schools try not to let us in to talk to the members this can be changed if you let us know that this is happening.
The meetings will take approximately 1 hour and it has been agreed by management that staff will be released during works time to attend these session. Whilst the GMB will only be able to take views back from members we do welcome non-members to attend and seek information as we also have a responsibility under collective bargaining to inform non-members of the union about changes to T & C’s. If you are a non-member you will be entitled to be released along with your colleagues and if you are not in a union then this is the time to join so that you can ensure your voice is heard.
At the same time as holding the contract change meetings we will also be bringing information with us regarding other important updates from the GMB – come along and get the right information. I look forward to seeing you at the meetings. In addition encourage your work colleagues to come along to the meetings.
