GMB say West Midlands young people `left to suffer` as 37 per cent of Childrens Centre slashed since 2010
Solihull left without a single facility as region faces ‘ticking time bomb’ according to union
GMB says young people in the West Midlands are being left to suffer with 37 per cent of children’s centres closing in the region since 2010.
Figures obtained by the Labour party under a Freedom of Information request reveal 140 centres have closed in the region since the Conservatives came to power.
In 2010 the West Midlands had 375 children’s centres – now there are just 235.
In Solihull, the local authority reported they have no designated children’s centres left.
GMB described the drop as creating a ‘ticking time bomb’ for young people.
Joe Morgan, GMB Regional Secretary, said:
“These unwarranted closures are nothing short of a scandal – and our kids will end up paying the price.
“Children’s centres are vital for community cohesion and provide much-needed advice, help and activities for the next generation of West Midlanders.
“This relentless stripping away of our young people’s services is leaving our children to suffer.
“It’s a self-defeating policy which will create a ticking time bomb for us all.”
